Raymond H. Moore

Raymond H. Moore, age 98, died Monday, December 24, 2012 at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses, Kansas. He was born November 29, 1914 in Reno County, Kansas, the son of Ivan O. and Opal Grace (Simmonds) Moore.
Raymond moved southeast of Stevens County on the farm at the age of four. In the third grade the family moved to Hugoton. Raymond graduated from Hugoton High School. While in high school he worked for Bloodhart Drug and worked for Santa Fe Depot after high school. In 1939, Raymond moved to Pratt where he met his wife, Ruth Mable Swonger. They were married on February 23, 1942 at the Baptist church in Pratt. Raymond served in the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific as a Communications Chief. After his honorable discharge, they moved to Hugoton, Kansas where he retired after 38 years from the Gamble’s Store. He served two terms as the Mayor of Hugoton in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Raymond was also a member of the Masonic Lodge for 75 years, Rotary Club, Hugoton Chamber of Commerce, and United Methodist Church were he was very active and served on the building committee. Raymond enjoyed gardening, and was very family oriented; making sure his grandkid’s bikes were always in running condition.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth, of Ulysses, Kansas; one son, Dennis Moore and wife Pamela of Hugoton, Kansas; two daughters, Celain Baker and husband Gary of Hugoton, Shila Moore of Salt Lake City, Utah; six grandchildren, Arica, Nate, Cody, Cail, Cam, and Case; and seven great-great grandchildren.
Raymond is preceded in death by his grandson, Sean Ivan Moore; and two sisters, Vera Fidler of Meade, Kansas and Velva Schwartz of Derby, Kansas.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, December 29, 2012 at 2:00 PM at United Methodist Church in Hugoton with Pastor Harry Cross officiating. Interment will follow at the Hugoton Cemetery in Hugoton with Military Rites conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may call Friday, December 28, 2012 from 10:00 AM until 8:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Hugoton. Memorial contributions may be given in lieu of flowers to the United Methodist Church in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 423 S. Main, Hugoton, KS 67951.
