Ralph Warren Chain

Ralph Warren Chain, 102, of Liberal, KS, passed over to his heavenly home on October 8, 2023. Only one week from turning 103, The Lord decided it was time for his mind and body to be whole again, and what a precious gift that was.

Warren was born on October 14, 1920, near Haven, KS, to Ralph and Mamie Chain. He was the only brother to three sisters. The 1920s was known as the decade of change, and the world sure was changed when Warren entered it. Born into a family of farmers and ranchers, he was working as soon as he could walk. He held that standard of hard work throughout his entire life.

Warren attended Haven High School, graduating in May of 1938. He graduated from Hutchinson Junior College with a degree in drafting in May of 1941. In February of 1942 he enlisted and became a Merchant Marine. Warren was selected as a purser, and later in his service was trained as a Hospital Corpsman. He made voyages to Durban, South Africa and Okinawa, Japan. Following the war, he returned home to Haven and continued farming. Upon his return home he met his wife, Gynetha, and on September 16, 1951 they were married. They would go on to have 5 children.

Soon after they married, Warren decided he was sick of the rain in that part of the country, and the drier climate of Utah beckoned. Over the years he made a living of farming and was not afraid of moving on to new opportunities. He would go on to farm in Nevada, Colorado, Texas, and Oklahoma. Warren never backed down from a new challenge.

Warren had many hobbies over the years. He tried his hand at many things including: blacksmithing, perfecting his biscuits and bread making, machining, horticulture, photography, wood working, and becoming a columnist in the local paper under the name “Joe Agstuff”. At the age of 91 he even returned to college to continue his education.

Warren was defined by his hard work, faith, and grit. He led his family with love and a steady hand. Warren taught his family that they were capable of anything they set their mind to and led by example.

He was preceded in death by his much-loved wife, Gynetha Chain, and daughter, Phyllis, his sisters: Chlodene and Virginia.

Warren is survived by four sons: David Chain and wife M.J. of Spokane Washington, Ralph Chain and wife Loretta of Guymon, Oklahoma, Jeff Chain and wife Cindy of Alabama and James Chain and wife Tammy of Turpin, Oklahoma, Eleven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A come and go gathering to celebrate Warrens birthday and life will be held from 11:00 a.m. till 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 14, 2023 at 119101 E.W. 3 road in Turpin, Oklahoma.
