Pat Meng

Ela Patrice "Pat" Meng, 84, of Hooker, Oklahoma passed away June 16, 2015 at Liberal Springs in Liberal, Kansas.

Pat was born January 11, 1931 in Hutchinson, Kansas, the daughter of Bryan Ernest and Lucy Ela Thompson Shaw. The family lived in Goodwell, Oklahoma where her father managed the Big Jo Lumberyard. Several years later the lumberyard chain relocated her father to Aztec, New Mexico where Pat attended Junior High School and then to Hooker, Oklahoma where she attended High School and graduated in 1948.

Pat attended Panhandle Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Panhandle State University) in Goodwell and obtained a Bachelors Degree in 1952.

On March 1, 1951 she was united in marriage to Earl Dean Meng at the United Methodist Church in Hooker. Their marriage of more than sixty-four years has been an inspiration to both family and friends.

As a teacher in the Hooker Elementary School System for over twenty-five tears, Pat encouraged her students to complete and further their education. Over the years she remained close with many of her former students.

Pat was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hooker. She received a 50-year pin as a member of the Hooker Order of the Eastern Star, where she was a Past Matron. She enjoyed active memberships in both Hagolu and The Red Hat Society women’s social groups. In her spare time Pat enjoyed playing bridge, the challenge of working crossword puzzles and the joy of gardening. Pat and her husband Earl, with a core group of others, were instrumental in the downtown renovation of Hooker upon acceptance by the Main Street Program.

An extensive traveler, she enjoyed trips to Italy, England and Switzerland, cruises to Alaska and the Caribbean with her family and trips up and down the California coast and as well as visits to central Texas to visit family.

Preceded in death by her parents, brother Lloyd Shaw and brother-in-law Edwin Herbel, Pat is survived by husband Earl Dean, two sons, Gregory Dean Meng of Los Angeles, California and Arlen Keith Meng and his wife Debi of Weatherford, Texas; two grandchildren, Justa Dowler and her husband Drew of Weatherford, Texas and Jaton Crownover and his wife Alexis of Saginaw, Texas; great-grandson Jameson Crownover; sisters in-law Betty Herbel of Hooker and Ruth Shaw of Sequim, Washington.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 18, 2015 at the United Methodist Church in Hooker with Rev. Craig S. Denslow officiating. Interment will be in the Hooker Cemetery under the direction of Roberts Brothers Funeral Home in Hooker, Oklahoma.

Memorials are suggested to the Main Street Clock Fund and may be left at Roberts Brothers Funeral Home, Box 745, Hooker, Oklahoma 73945.
