Olivia Salinas

Olivia Salinas, age 89, of Ulysses, Kansas died Thursday, December 24, 2015 at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. She was born June 3, 1926 in Brownsville, Texas, the daughter of Valente and Alicia (Enfante) Cordova.
Olivia married Carlos Salinas Sr. in Brownsville, Texas on November 16, 1944. They moved to Texhoma, Oklahoma in 1955 and did farm work. In 1960, they moved to Ulysses, Kansas and continued working on the farms and operating the melon shed. Olivia worked for Green Thumb of Kansas for 18 years. This was her favorite job, as she helped people find jobs. Olivia also worked as a respiratory therapist at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital, was a notary public, and worked in the Grant County Library café until the age of 87. Olivia loved her family. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also an accomplished seamstress and cook.
She is survived by her four sons, Francisco Salinas of Muleshoe, Texas, Avelardo Salinas of Ulysses, Kansas, Robert Salinas of Garden City, Kansas, Ismael Salinas of Beaver, Oklahoma; one daughter, Elizabeth Salinas Newby of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; grandson, Carlos Salinas of Ulysses, Kansa; granddaughter, Adela Martinez of Rock Island, Illinois; sisters, Odelia Ramon of Hugoton, Kansas, Otilia Cordova and Orelia Cordova both of Pasadena, Texas; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Olivia is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carlos in 2006; sister, Ofelia and brother, Veto.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at Primera Iglesia Bautista in Ulysses, Kansas with Doctor James Newby officiating. Interment will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses, Kansas. Friends may call from 10:00 AM until 7:00 PM on Monday, December 28, 2015 at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.
