Norma Hill

Norma Lee Hill, age 85, of Ulysses, Kansas died Monday, April 21, 2014 at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. She was born July 14, 1928 in Kiowa County, Kansas, the daughter of Verdie Herbert and Marietta “Maye” Bertha (Johnson) Mitchell.

Norma moved to Grant County at the age of 5. During her high school years, she worked at Sturman’s Drug Store. She graduated from Grant County Rural High School in 1946. Norma worked at Crocker Theatre and Drive-in, Firestone, and the bowling alley. She owned the Crystal Grill then cooked at Kepley Junior High School. In the summertime she ran roguing crews. Norma married Leonard Hill Jr. on June 9, 1946 in Ulysses. Norma and Leonard started the Emergency Medical Technician’s organization in the 70’s. Norma and Leonard owned Southwest Fire Extinguisher and Nutrition Center; retiring in the mid 1990’s. They played Mr. and Mrs. Clause at Christmas time. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #79, Rebekah Lodge, active in the 4-H program, a member of the Hickok Club, enjoyed helping with the Home Products Dinner, and helped organize the All-Class School Reunion. Norma was a good cook and an accomplished seamstress.

She is survived by four daughters, Susan Britton of Ulysses, Kansas, Barbara Lancaster and husband Dean of Sterling, Kansas, Mary Jo Dimitt and husband Terry of Ulysses, Kansas, Terri Ann Scott and husband Dennis of Livingston, Texas; sister, Ellen May of Sun City, Arizona; 14 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Leonard on November 1, 2008.

Funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, April 25, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses, Kansas with Reverend Janet Hernandez officiating. Interment will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses, Kansas. Friends may call from 10:00 AM until 8:00 PM on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses. Memorial contributions may be given to Park View Assisted Living or the United Methodist Church in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS 67880.
