Mollie Beard

Mollie Martina Beard, age 92, of Ulysses, Kansas died Thursday, June 7, 2012 at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses, Kansas. She was born July 24, 1919 in Seward, Kansas, the daughter of Henry H. (Hank) and Florence M. (Mullen) Schilling.

Mollie grew up in Seward, Kansas and graduated from Radium High School in 1937. Following graduation, she taught in the Stafford County Country Schools and worked at the county ASC office. Mollie married Clyde E. Beard in Lyons, Kansas on September 27, 1941, and celebrated their 50 th wedding anniversary in 1991. During World War II, Mollie lived in Hutchinson, Kansas and worked at First National Bank. After the war, Mollie and Clyde owned and operated Beard Cleaners in Stafford. Mollie and Clyde moved to Ulysses in 1965. She was a secretary and bookkeeper for Houck Brothers for many years. She was the State President for Business and Professional Women in 1985, member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and was on the church calling committee, played bridge and was an active bowler. Mollie was an avid sports fan, and especially enjoyed watching KU play.

She is survived by one son, Gardell Beard of Ulysses, Kansas; one daughter, Denise Beard of Kansas City, Missouri; one brother, Vernon Schilling of Stafford, Kansas; one sister-in-law, Rita Schilling of Seward, Kansas; one granddaughter, Annette Brown, and one great-granddaughter, Victoria Brown both of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clyde on March 27, 1999; and two brothers, Homer, and Gail; and one sister, Alline.

Memorial service will be held Monday, June 11, 2012 at 10:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses, Kansas with Reverend Wayne Flanders officiating. Graveside service will be Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at 10:00 AM at Stafford Cemetery in Stafford Kansas. Friends may call Sunday, June 10, 2012 from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses. Memorial contributions may be given in lieu of flowers to the First United Methodist Church of Ulysses, Grant County Scholarship Foundation or American Cancer Society in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS 67880.
