Michael Mouzon “Mike” Weatherby, 68, died suddenly Sunday evening on June 6, 2021 at his home in Plains, Kansas. He was born on May 14, 1953 in Liberal, Kansas to Lucille Faye (Polf) and Edwin Mouzon Weatherby. Mike graduated from Liberal High School with the class of 1972. He married Merry Lynn (Davis) on July 22, 1972 at the Western Avenue Church of Christ in Liberal.
In 1973 Mike and his dad opened W&W Auto Repair in Hardesty, OK. He transitioned to pipeline work in 1976 when he took a position with Kansas-Nebraska Pipeline out of Tyrone, OK. In 1978 Mike went to work for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline, a company which took him from Dumas, TX to Paulding, OH then back to Hardesty, OK before he transferred to Liberal, KS where he worked as a stenciled welder before retiring in 2018 after a 35 year career.
He served the community of Hardesty as a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical responder for 16 years. Mike could be counted on to lend a hand any time his friends or family needed anything. The depth of love many felt for Mike cannot be adequately expressed in words; he will be remembered fondly and missed deeply.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 49 years, Merry Weatherby of the home; sons, JW of Wichita, KS, and Jeremy of Oklahoma City, OK; daughters, Misty Nichols and husband Michael of Magnolia, AR, and Tamra Shepard and husband Andy of Leeds, England; grandchildren, Michelle David, Jessica Collins, Page Nichols, Mikayla Hopoate, Renna Weatherby, Enzo Weatherby, and Emma Strydom; great-grandchildren, Kali Collins, Kinli Collins, and Amelia David, a sister, Miogene Alexander of Lantana, TX; and a brother, Jim Weatherby and wife Gerri of Hardesty, OK; and many great friends he made along the way.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Mouzon and Lucille Weatherby; a baby sister, Virginia Mae Weatherby; in-laws, Arthur P. and Joye Eloise (Bryan) Davis; and a sister-in-law, Shelia Gould.
Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 12, 2021 at Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary.
Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 12, 2021 at the Meade Elementary School Auditorium. The service will live stream on the Filder-Orme-Bachman Mortuary Facebook page. Burial will be at a later date.
