Michael (Mike) J. Brond

Michael (Mike) J. Brond, 61, of Liberal, passed away on Friday, October 14, 2022, at St. Francis Via Christi Hospital in Wichita, KS.

He was born on July 28, 1961, to James and Carol (Lala) Brown at Grand Forks, ND.

On August 17, 1985, he married Barbara Hattendorf in Scott City, KS. The pair were college sweethearts after meeting at Kansas State University their freshman year of college.

Mike was a graduate of Clay Center High School, obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in finance from Kansas State University, and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon.

Mike and Barb moved to Liberal in 1987. He served as the Vice President of Equity Bank in Liberal before his retirement earlier this year. Mike was very active in the Liberal community and loved getting to know so many different people. Mike was active in Kid’s Inc. and has served on the Liberal Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. He was also a member of the Liberal Chamber Ambassadors, served as their chairman and received the Ambassador of the Year Award in 1991. He also served on the E-Community Financial Review Board for the City of Liberal, was Assistant Treasurer for SCCC and spoke at business classes at LHS. He served in many positions on the church council at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was also a longtime member of Liberal Lions Club and active at Liberal Country Club.

He has also received several awards and honors including the Man of Distinction Award from the Liberal Chamber of Commerce in 2013, the Chamber of Commerce #1 Ambassador in 1992, and the President’s Award of Lion’s Club from 1997-1998.

He loved golfing, reading, watching K-State sports, camping and being with his family.

Mike is survived by his loving wife Barbara; daughter Jamie Rzewnicki and husband Jacob of Overland Park, KS; son Caleb Brond of Kansas City, MO; mother Carol A. Brown of Clay Center, KS; sister Kimberly K. Prideaux and husband Doug of Wichita, KS.

He was preceded in death by his father, James A. Brown, and his twin brother, Steven A. Brond.

There will be no viewing as cremation has taken place.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 21, 2022, at the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, with Pastor Conrad Oehlert, officiating.
