Melva Jean Tuggle

Melva Jean Tuggle, age 87, died Wednesday, January 29, 2020, at Pioneer Manor in Hugoton, Kansas. She was born October 2, 1932, in Syracuse, Kansas, the daughter of Fred W. and Ella M. (Kendrick) Raney.

Melva grew up in Johnson and graduated from Johnson High School. She attended Colorado Women’s College in Denver. Melva married Thomas Tuggle. They later divorced and she moved to Denver, Colorado, where she raised their two sons. Melva was a devoted mother and proud of her family heritage in farming and ranching. She was very close to her parents and she and her sons would come back to her parents’ farm to visit during the summers and holidays. Melva will be remembered as a spirited woman and devout Christian who read her Bible and scriptures daily. She was an active member of the Calvary Temple in Denver. She loved to garden, enjoyed music and the arts, and visiting with family and friends. Melva was currently living at Pioneer Manor in Hugoton, Kansas.

She is survived by her two sons, Brett Tuggle of Porter Ranch, California, and Kent Tuggle of Lakeport, California; two grandchildren, Michelle Schuchman and Matthew Tuggle; and three great-grandchildren, Olivia Schuchman, Aleksi Schuchman, and Delaney Schuchman. 

Melva is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Marilyn Cockreham; and brother, Charles F. Raney.

Funeral service will be 1:30 PM Saturday, February 8, 2020, at the First United Methodist Church in Johnson, Kansas, with Reverend Todd Guinn officiating. Interment will follow at Syracuse Cemetery in Syracuse, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be given to the donor’s choice in care of Garnand Funeral Home, PO Box 715, Johnson, KS 67855.
