Maurice O. Mitchell

Maurice O. Mitchell, 83, of Turpin, Oklahoma passed away May 28, 2014 at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal, Kansas.

Maurice was born April 25, 1931, on the family farm in Beaver County, the son of James Leslie and Thelma Sherrill Mitchell.

Maurice was raised in the Adams community and attended Adams Schools, and was graduated from Adams High School with the class of 1950. He then attended Panhandle A&M in Goodwell, Oklahoma graduating in 1954 with a degree in Agronomy. Upon graduation he began his career with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service as a soil scientist in both Texas and Beaver Counties. He was chosen Soil Conservationist of the year in 1975 in Texas County.

Maurice was united in marriage to Kathryn McPherson on June 15, 1956 at the First Christian Church in Hooker, Oklahoma.

He was a devout Christian and a member of the First Christian Church in Hooker, served as Sunday school teacher, chairman of the Board, and as an elder and deacon.

Maurice also served as Unit Supervisor for the McAlester, Oklahoma Soil Conservation District before taking over the family farm when his father retired. He was a farmer in the Adams-Baker, Oklahoma area.

He was a 50 plus year member of the Masonic Lodge in Guymon, Oklahoma.

Proceeding in death where his parents, brothers-in-law Norman McPherson and Ted Williams.

Maurice is survived by his wife of 57 years Kathryn Mitchell of the home; brothers James Mitchell and his wife Josephine of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Dwayne Mitchell and his wife Donnie of Spearman, Texas, Auburn Mitchell and his wife Sara of Austin, Texas; sisters, Mignon Sullivan and her husband Gale of Lewisville, Texas and Evonne Roberson and her husband Dee of Edmond, Oklahoma; sisters-in-law Jean McPherson of San Antonio, Texas, Patricia Williams of Bolivar, Missouri and brother-in-law Jim McPherson and his wife Rudena of Muskogee, Oklahoma along with an aunt Avanell Mitchell of Liberal, Kansas and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 2, 2014 at the First Christian Church in Hooker, Oklahoma with Rev. Roy Berkley officiating. Interment will be in the Hooker Cemetery under the direction of Roberts Brothers Funeral Home in Hooker, Oklahoma.
