After living a very fulfilling life at the age of 95, Mary Lee Smith’s journey came to an end on Thursday, February 1, 2024.
Mary Lee Smith was born on January 4, 1929, in Liberal, Kansas to loving parents Floyd Hook and Helen (Meyers) Hook. Mary attended several schools in western Kansas and Oklahoma while her father followed gainful employment in the area. After her parents settled in Baker, Oklahoma, Mary eventually graduated from Liberal High School.
Mary met the love of her life Delose “Bus” Fredrick Smith after the end of World War II while attending High School in Liberal, Kansas. They later married in the Methodist Church in Hugoton, Kansas on December 6, 1947, where they made their home. After a few years, they moved to Liberal where Delose landed his carrier job with Panhandle Eastern. While living in Liberal, Kansas she bore their two sons, Terry (1953) and Tim (1957). They ultimately settled in Guymon, Oklahoma until his retirement in 1983 when they moved to Tyrone, Oklahoma to care for Mary’s ageing mother.
Mary was known for her incredible skills as a homemaker and a talented cook. She took great pride in serving up delicious meals for her family and friends.
Mary’s adventurous spirit shone through in her independent nature. She fearlessly embarked on numerous road trips to visit her son in Wyoming, driving herself until 1980.
Mary possessed several creative talents. She had a gift for sewing and made her own garments with precision. Additionally, she showcased her artistic prowess through painting with oil and watercolor mediums. Her canvas extended beyond traditional surfaces as she whimsically painted on saw blades and various objects.
Gardening brought Mary immense joy throughout her life. She nurtured vibrant vegetable gardens and flower beds that bloomed under her watchful eye. Even at the age of 86, Mary took pride in mowing her own lawn, proving that age should never hinder one’s spirit.
