Martha Jane Landes, age 88, of Ulysses, Kansas, died Wednesday, June 8, 2022, at Western Prairie Senior Living Community in Ulysses, Kansas. She was born December 13, 1933, in Anthony, Kansas, the daughter of James Washington and Nellie Mae (Trotter) Knox.
Martha was raised in Attica, Kansas, and attended schools in Dodge City. After graduation she attended junior college in Dodge City. She also completed a CNA course and CMA course. Martha married David L. “Bud” Landes on September 4, 1953, in Kingman, Kansas. They lived in Dodge City and Golden, Colorado, before permanently settling in Ulysses in 1974. She took care of their home and children and when time allowed worked at Ferguson’s, Samsonite, Lakewood Nursing Home, Coors Porcelain, Denver Plastics, Western Prairie Care Home, Park View Assisted Living, and retired after 10 years from Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital as a Certified Medical Aide. Martha was a member of College Street Baptist Church, Women’s Club, and record keeper at Country View Baptist Church. Martha was the greatest and most loving mom. She will be remembered as having a brilliant mind and making even the smallest details matter.
Martha is survived by daughter, Tina Schmidt of Garfield, Kansas; son, Mark Landes of Beaverton, Oregon; sisters, Mary Marie Thomas of Springfield, Missouri, and Rebecca Watts of Osceola, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Martha is preceded in death by her parents, James and Nellie Knox; husband, Bud in 2020; daughter, Patricia Beardsley; brothers, Samuel and Paul Knox; sister, Margaret Cramer; and two great-grandsons.
Memorial service will be held Friday, June 17, 2022, at 2:00 PM at Country View Baptist Church in Ulysses with Pastor James Berry officiating. She will be laid to rest next to her husband at Kansas Veteran’s Cemetery in Fort Dodge, Kansas, at a later date.
