She was born October 31, 1938, in Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico, a daughter of the late Jeronimo Chavez and Ana Josefa Morales.
Lucy was a great storyteller, always entertaining her family and friends with the many stories of her life growing up in Parral and later in Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico. She would cross the border into El Paso where she worked as a housekeeper to support her family. She eventually became a US citizen and moved to Liberal to help care for two of her granddaughters.
She was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, where she faithfully served as a sacristan and a minister of communion for a little over 21 years. She was a homemaker that enjoyed crocheting, working on her many plants and flower garden, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Lucy is survived by one son and two daughters, Baltazar Espinoza (Yolanda) of Juarez, Mexico, Maria de Jesus Ramirez (Hector) of Sioux City, Iowa, and Yolanda French of Liberal, Kansas; thirteen grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; one brother and two sisters, Pablo Chavez of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Juana Chavez of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Victoria Armendariz (Edmundo) of Wichita, Kansas. She also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss her.
Lucy was preceded in death by her parents; an aunt, Maria Chavez; a brother, Juan Chavez; and one son, Bruno Espinoza.
Visitation is from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM, Sunday, October 3, 2021, at the Hornung Family Funeral Home 1212 W. 2nd Liberal, KS 67901.
Rosary will be held 7:00 PM, Sunday, October 3, 2021, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Liberal, Kansas.
Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 AM, Monday, October 4, 2021, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Liberal, Kansas, with Father Juan Salas officiating. Cremation will follow.
