Margaret May Howell Hoeme passed away Monday, December 8, in Liberal, Kansas, at the age of 83 years. She was born November 3, 1931 in Clayton, New Mexico, one of nine children born to Mary Margaret Neatherlin and James Howell. Her father nicknamed her Bobbye.

She graduated from Clayton High School and, the day after graduation, was hired by the Union County Leader newspaper as a proofreader. Following her mother’s death in 1952, she and her sisters moved to Hooker, Oklahoma, where she worked at the First National Bank.

Bobbye met Clarence, but moved to Liberal, Kansas, with her sister Charmagne and worked as a receptionist at the Medical Arts Center. Her future husband, Clarence Dayle Hoeme, proposed to her and she moved back to Hooker.

Bobbye and Clarence were united in marriage on September 5, 1954, and have two children: Tara, born June 15, 1955, and Kristal, born May 19, 1960.

After her daughters were raised, Bobbye worked for several years as a teacher’s aide at Hooker Public Schools. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and taught Sunday school. She helped organize and start the mission, All Faiths Ministries, which has helped to clothe many people in need, not only those living in Hooker but in many surrounding communities. She was also a member of the Baker Arts Center in Liberal.

Bobbye was a world traveler on numerous occasions. Beginning in the 1980s she and Clarence took a Caribbean island cruise, a 10-country tour of Europe, a cruise in the Grecian isles (including a stop in Istanbul), a thousand-mile journey up the Amazon, a Mediterranean cruise, and a cruise up the coast of British Columbia to Alaska. They also took their daughter Kristal on an additional bus-tour of Europe in the early 1990s.

Margaret personified beauty both inside and out, and is remembered as a loving and generous person.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings Clayton Howell, Moral Earnest Howell, Andrew Mack Howell, Raymond James Howell, Emma Lou Howell Wright, and Sabra Glee Howell Feldman.

She is survived by her husband, Clarence Hoeme, of Hooker; daughters Tara Anderson of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Kristal Tomshany, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; granddaughters Claire Anderson Elkins and Kenzie Zwayer; sisters Kay Howell Cox and husband, J. D., and Charmagne Howell Moore and husband, John; and numerous nieces and nephews.
