Leon Shapland

Leon Shapland, age 94, of Ulysses, Kansas, died Monday, October 30, 2017, at Western Prairie Senior Living Community in Ulysses. He was born May 19, 1923, on the farm in Lane County, Kansas, the son of Oswald Ernest and Mary Elizabeth (Miller) Shapland.

Leon grew up in Lane County and graduated from Dighton High School in 1942. While in high school, he played basketball. After he finished school, Leon moved to Grant County to farm. Later he moved to Kearny County where he lived and farmed for 70 years. Leon married Peggy Alene Yohn in Ulysses on December 22, 1948. He enjoyed farming and running cattle, and listening to Country and Western music. He and Peggy traveled to 35 states and Jamaica. Leon was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his children, Connie Dawson of Greensburg, Leland Shapland and wife Linda of Garden City, Debra Crall and husband Edward of Thomas, Oklahoma, and Kevin Shapland and companion Katie Metcalf of Ulysses; sister, Helen Jewett of Overland Park; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. 

Leon is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Peggy; brothers, Elmer, Claud, Melvin and William Shapland; and sisters, Carrie Honeyman and Lucy Reed.

Funeral service will be Thursday, November 2, 2017, at 2:00 PM at the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses with Reverend Todd Guinn officiating. Interment will follow at Ulysses Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, November 1, 2017, from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses. Memorial contributions may be given to Grant County Scholarship Foundation in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS 67880.
