Lennis J. Hanes, age 88, died October 8, 2022, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. She was born July 25, 1934, in Boise City, Oklahoma, the daughter of Samuel Tony and Winnie Mae (Wood) Hughes.

Lennis grew up in Boise City and graduated in 1952 from Boise City High School. She married Ward G. Hanes on December 27, 1954, in Clayton, New Mexico. She lived in Boise City, Oklahoma, Sunray and Dumas, Texas, and Garden City, Kansas. Lennis enjoyed taking care of her grandkids and cooking.

Lennis is survived by her daughter, Christy Schaefer and husband Erich of Garden City; son, Samuel Houston Hanes of Garden City; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Lennis is preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Winnie Hughes; husband, Ward G. Hanes; three children, Cheryl Lynn Hanes, Ward Douglas Hanes and Pamela Jene Welch; one sister and two brothers.

Graveside service will be held Thursday, October 13, 2022, at 2:00 PM at the Boise City Cemetery in Boise City, Oklahoma. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the New Mexico Christian Children’s Home in care of Garnand Funeral Home, PO Box 854, Elkhart, KS 67950.
