Kenneth Melvin Cox

Kenneth Melvin Cox, 79, passed away on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at Satanta District Hospital. He was born on August 23, 1945, to Edna Aletha (Harman) and Forrest Melvin Cox in Garden City, Kansas.

Kenneth grew up in Sublette, Kansas, where he graduated from Sublette High School in 1963. He continued his education at Kansas State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in agriculture. Farming was his passion, and after college, he returned home to work alongside his father, dedicating his life to agriculture. He found joy in walking through his fields, especially when the corn stood tall, carefully inspecting the progress of his crops.

In the early 1970s, Kenneth developed a love for travel, visiting places like Palm Springs, Jamaica, and Cancun, Mexico. He especially enjoyed the dry heat and the beaches, finding comfort in the warm sun and the sound of the ocean. His love for adventure extended to his passion for cars and racing. He was an avid collector and a dedicated supporter of the racing community, sponsoring cars and attending races in Kansas City, Dallas, and Las Vegas.

Kenneth had a dry sense of humor and loved hearing a good joke. His compassion extended to animals, and he rescued all of his beloved dogs from the Finney County Humane Society. A devoted Kansas State football fan, he was a season ticket holder for many years and attended games until his health no longer allowed it—though he never missed cheering on the Wildcats from home.

Kenneth’s presence will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. His legacy of hard work, humor, and generosity will live on in the hearts of those he touched.

He is survived by his sister, Sheryl Cox Gillis of Denver, CO; nephew, Jeffrey Gillis of Denver, CO; cousins, Dennis Hill and wife Georgia Shrauner of Sublette, KS, DeAnn Hammer and husband Steve of Sublette, KS, and Kevin Morris and wife Becky of Topeka, KS; longtime companion, Kay Cullison Larkin of Moscow, KS; and his farm family, Ralph, Donny, Betty, Garrett, Jacob, Abram, Peter, Cornelias, and Ben.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Forrest and Edna Cox; and a nephew, Andrew Gillis.
