Julia Jeanette Warner, 93, died on Saturday, March 25, 2023 In Liberal, KS.
On April 25, 1953 she married Frederick L. “Pete” Warner at Hays, Kansas. He survives.
She was a lifelong citizen of Southwest Kansas, born in Dodge City, spent her childhood in Meade, lived for a time in Sublette, moving to Liberal in 1946. She was born to John and Katherine Adams Sullivan on July 19, 1929. Both sets of her grandparents were early settlers in Meade County. Her maternal grandparents moved there in 1886. Her grandmother was the Register of Deeds in 1893, one of the first women to hold this office in Kansas. Her maternal grandfather served in the Kansas House of Representatives during the terms of 1900 and 1906. Her grandparents operated the Lakeway Hotel. They owned horses, one of which was a descendant of the great Dan Patch.
Her paternal grandfather rode the train to Plains in the early 1900’s where he had employment as a stenographer for John Baughman. He had many interests including hunting, fishing, and photography. He raised ponies, worked for a newspaper, wrote short stories and two books about Meade. He served as the Grand Knight of Pythais for the State of Kansas and was an attorney. He was the County Attorney for Meade County for many years. In 1903 he and his wife, Myrtle, moved to Meade where she had the nicest flower garden in town.
Julia Jeanette graduated from Liberal High School with the class of 1947. After graduation she attended Cottey College for Women, graduating from Ft. Hays State University where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. Julia’s career included teaching kindergarten, serving as a probation officer and, for twenty five years, she was a social worker for the State of Kansas.
She is also survived by her three daughters, Sara, husband Rick Wood, sons Derek, Adam, and Patrick; Susan, husband Tom Rathbun, children Scott, Sara Jane, Chad (Ambree), Michelle and Kati; Jane and son Matthew Link. She is also survived by her brothers, Douglas Sullivan and family, Oklahoma City and Dr. Stephen Sullivan and family of Denison, Texas and several cousins.
Viewing will be 8:30 am to 11:30 am on Friday March 31, 2023 at Miller Mortuary; the family will be present to greet friends from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.
Graveside Service will be 1:30 Friday, March 31, 2023 at the Graceland Cemetery in Meade, KS with Rev. Jeff Mitchell, officiating.
