Joseph R. Weis Jr

Joseph R. Weis Jr., age 78, of Ulysses, Kansas died Sunday, April 3, 2016 at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses, Kansas. He was born August 16, 1937 in Lamar, Colorado, the son of Joseph R. Sr. and Marie (McPherson) Weis.
Joe grew up in Johnson, Kansas and graduated with the class of 1957. He married Shirley Wells on August 9, 1957 in Johnson. Joe was a service sales engineer for Dowell-Schlumberger. His company transferred his family to various places including Lamar, Colorado and Alamogordo, New Mexico. Joe and Shirley moved back to Ulysses in 2010. Joe was a devoted family man. He enjoyed attending his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s activities and sporting events. He loved listening to music and taught all his children to dance. He also enjoyed horses and was a member of various horse clubs. While living in Colorado, he enforced the rules and regulations for the Meadows community. Joe enjoyed gardening and all animals in general.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley of their home; sons, Michael Weis and wife Shelley of Paris, Missouri, Mark Weis and wife Jada of Ulysses, Kansas; daughters, Tamara Dieker and husband Steve of Ulysses, Kansas, Kimberly McGaughey and husband Mark of Ulysses, Kansas; brother, James Weis of Peyton, Colorado; sister, Margaret Witsken of Dodge City, Kansas; 15 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and 12 nieces and nephews.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jerry Weis and John Weis; and sisters, Joy Sanders and Ruth Burgess.
Vigil service will be held Friday, April 8, 2016 at 7:00 PM and funeral mass will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses, Kansas with Reverend Peter Fernandez officiating. Friends may call Thursday, April 7, 2016 from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses. Cremation will follow mass service. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Ulysses Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Polymyositis Research in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS 67880.
