Joan Janice Guenther

After a long and amazing life Joan Janice Guenther, age 93, died on Saturday, February 15, 2025, in Liberal, Kansas.

She was born on April 25, 1931, in Rushmore, Minnesota, to Anthony and Anna (Smith) Malmquist. Joan was a graduate of Worthington High School in Minnesota. She was united in marriage to Ferris Guenther on June 17, 1948, in Rushmore. They were married for 57 years until his death on July 17, 2005.

In 1960, Joan and Ferris made their home in Eva, Oklahoma. It was in Elkhart that Joan truly flourished, dedicating over 50 years of her life as a devoted secretary for Bultman Inc.

A loving mother, Joan cherished her role as a parent to her two sons and two daughters.

Joan’s deep faith was an integral part of her life, as she was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church in Elkhart, where she formed lasting friendships.

In 2018, Joan relocated to Liberal, Kansas. Her memory will forever remain alive in the hearts of those she touched.

She is survived by her two sons, Mark Guenther and his wife, Ramona of Guymon, Oklahoma, and

Tim Guenther and his wife, Shona of Carthage, Texas,

Two daughters, Sandra Carter of Liberal, Kansas, and

Carolyn Alberts and her husband, Eugene of Temple, Texas

Eight grandchildren, Jason Franz,

Jamie Minneman and her husband, Doug,

Heidi Ross and her husband, Jeremy,

Valerie Ray,

Kayse Burgess and her husband, Walker,

Justin Carter and his wife, Linsey,

Natasha Cain and her wife, Nancy, and

Krista Alvarado and her husband, Rafael, and

Twenty-two great grandchildren, and

Two great, great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Ferris Guenther,

parents, Anthony and Anna Malmquist,

Brothers, Sumner, Birdie, Homer, Jay and Kenny Malmquist,

Sister, Dixie Janseen, and

Son-in-law, Bob Carter, and

Daughter-in-law, Joyce Guenther.

Visitation will be 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM, Sunday, February 23, 2025, at the Hornung Family Funeral Home, 1212 W 2nd Street, Liberal, Kansas.

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 AM, Monday, February 24, 2025, at Christ Lutheran Church, 813 Baca Avenue, Elkhart, Kansas, with Pastor Mark Wescoatt will be presiding.

Cremation will follow after the service and a private family burial will take place at a later date.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Christ Lutheran Church in care of Hornung Family Funeral Home, 1212 W 2nd Street, Liberal, Kansas.
