James (Jim) Leonard Hartless of Medicine Lodge, Kansas, died at the age of 59 on May 23, 2022, at his home in Medicine Lodge. Jim was born on March 13, 1963, in La Junta, Colorado, to Leonard Wayne Hartless and Shirley Ann (Carrica) Hartless.

Jim grew up with three brothers, Michael, Tom and Bill and a sister, Kelly. Jim graduated from La Junta High School. He married Maurina Bitner on March 12, 1988, in La Junta. They moved to Ulysses, Kansas, where he began a career at Riley Ford. Jim worked at Riley Ford for over 30 years. He also worked for the Ulysses Sheriff’s Office part time for many years. Jim has two daughters, Brianna and Kimber. Jim enjoyed camping, fishing and trap shooting. He would have loved to hunt more but Brianna told him he wasn’t allowed to kill Bambi’s parents, so he settled with bird hunting around the southwest Kansas area. Jim was an active member of the Ulysses Gun Club while he resided in Ulysses. He was a gun collector and recently in the last few years he became quite the coin collector as well. Jim loved horses, being outdoors, westerns on tv and of course the Denver Broncos. He loved the Broncos so much that at one time in his life he wanted his ashes scattered over Mile High Stadium. Above it all, Jim loved being a Papa to all of his grandkids and any kid that came around. If you asked Jim he would have told you he had tons of grandkids. He loved his family very much, and would do anything in the world he could for them!

Jim was survived in life by his daughters, Brianna and husband Preston Argo of Medicine Lodge, and Kimber and husband Sean Forsyth of Medicine Lodge; grandchildren, Clayton, Rowdie, Brecklynn, Jyntrie, Rowyn, and Rhett; brothers, Tom and wife Beth of Fowler, Colorado, and Bill and wife Christie of La Junta, Colorado; and sister, Kelly Meier of La Junta, Colorado; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He is preceded in death by Maurina Hartless; parents, Wayne and Shirley Hartless; grandchildren, Skyy and Blaze Argo; brother, Michael Hartless; and many aunts and uncles.

Jim was cremated and a memorial service will be held Saturday, June 11, 2022, at 2:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses with Minister Warren Baldwin officiating. Memorial contributions may be given to the Ulysses Gun Club in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave., Ulysses, KS 67880. Condolences may be posted at www.garnandfuneralhomes.com.
