James Gene “Grumpy” “Red” Garner

James Gene “Grumpy” “Red” Garner age 83, of Elkhart, KS died February 14, 2014 at the Morton County Care Center, Elkhart, Kansas. He was born June 8, 1930 at Norton, Kansas the son of James Edward and Sylvia Elizabeth (Brooke) Garner.

Gene was a lifelong Morton County resident and attended school in Richfield, Kansas. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1953. He worked many years for the Morton County Road Department operating a road grader. After retirement he enjoyed farming and trucking.

Survivors include one son James Garner of Beatrice, Nebraska and one daughter Julie Moon of Tyron, Oklahoma, seven grandchildren; Ranell Garner, Jennifer Garner, Airen, Moon, Joshua Garner, Hailey Navarette, Jeffery Garner and Carley Moon and five great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, one son John Garner and one daughter Janell Garner.

Graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, February 17, 2014 at the Richfield Cemetery, Richfield, Kansas with Reverend Sandy Ferguson officiating and Military Rites by VFW Point Rock Post #3162, Elkhart, Kansas. There will be no public calling hours. Memorial contributions may be given to the Morton County Care Center in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 514 Kansas Ave., Elkhart, KS 67950.
