James “Deac.” Witherspoon Sr.

James “Deac.” Witherspoon Sr., 85, of Liberal, left this earthly place on Friday November 3, 2023.

He was born November 28, 1937 in Pickens, AR, the son of Betty (Edwards) and Richard Witherspoon.

James was born on August 6, 1959, James married Essie V. Morgan whom he precedes in death.

He worked in the Auto Body & Paint Dept. at Stu Emmert’s Chevrolet and Wal-Mart as a door greeter for a number of years and enjoyed working on his cars in the yard in his spare time. James also loved singing and spent majority of his life traveling and spreading the word of God in songs with his group, The Melody Kings.

James is survived by Four sons: Ben (Frankie) Witherspoon, James Witherspoon Jr., both of Arlington, TX and Bobby Joe Witherspoon of Liberal, KS. Jaylin Staten of Dodge City, KS. Three daughters: Dixie (Kenny) Curry of Arlington, TX, Mary (Ulysses) Washington and LaTonya Witherspoon both of Liberal, KS. Two sisters: Bernestine Britt of Kansas City, MO and Gloria (Steve) Bailem of Mobile, AL. Two brothers: Fred (Tammi) Witherspoon and Michael (Shonte) Witherspoon both of Arlington, TX. 13 Grandchildren, 20 Great Grandchildren, and Three Great-Great Grandchildren as well as a host of other family members.

He is preceded in death by his parents, bonus mother Mary O. Witherspoon, One daughter, Gloria J. Brown, One son George Witherspoon, Six brothers: Benny Witherspoon, Richard Witherspoon, Lee Edward Witherspoon, Azell Witherspoon, Raymond Witherspoon, and Terry Witherspoon. Three Sisters: Eloise King, Margaret Simmons-Lester, and Delois Terry. One grand-daughter, Latasha Witherspoon.

Visitation will be 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm Friday November 10, 2023 at Miller Mortuary.

Funeral Services will be 10:00 am Saturday November 11, 2023, at the Bibleway C.O.G.I.C. Burial will follow at the Liberal City Cemetery
