Jack L. Berghaus

Jack L. Berghaus, age 92, passed away late Saturday evening, October 21, 2023, at the Northwest Texas Healthcare System, Amarillo, Texas.

He was born August 21, 1931, at Meade, Kansas, the son of Frank Joseph and Gertrude (Thornsberry) Berghaus. As a young boy, he attended school in Meade, graduating from Meade High School in 1949. After his graduation, he attended Kansas State University, receiving his degree in agriculture and serving in the United States Army ROTC program. Upon graduating college, he joined the United States Army, serving for several years, stationed in California. After his service, he returned to Meade and began his career in farming.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Kansas State Alumni Association, Lions Club, Farm Bureau, the men’s bowling league, and was a private pilot. He enjoyed woodworking and carpentry, making stained glass windows, gardening and yard work, raising livestock, flying, having Saturday dinner with close friends and spending time with his family.

In 1951, he married Velva Lea Fisher at Meade, Kansas. She precedes him in death on July 19, 2019.

He is survived by two daughters, Becky Lathrop of Pratt, Kansas, and Sandy Bachman of Colorado Springs, Colorado; six grandchildren, Lindsey, Katie, Matthew, Ryan, Clint, and Valeri; and nine great-grandchildren, Collin, Avery, Erica, Sarah, Brantley, Nora, Blaise, Arya, and Max.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Velva, and a brother Gene Berghaus.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 27, 2023, at the United Methodist Church, Meade. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary, Meade. Interment will follow in the Graceland Cemetery, Meade.

The family would welcome memorials to the United Methodist Church or the Living Memorial Program (found on the funeral home website) in care of the funeral home.
