Irene Chavez

Irene Chavez, age 82, of Ulysses, Kansas, died Monday, February 5, 2018, at Via Christi – St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. Kansas. She was born October 20, 1935, in Huejotitan, Chihuahua, Mexico, the daughter of Roberto and Adela (Chavez) Sanchez.

Irene grew up in Mexico. She married Juvencio Chavez in 1950 in Mexico. She moved to Ulysses in December 1979. Irene was very dedicated to her family. She was a wonderful and caring mother, and was always concerned about her family members, making time for all who needed her attention. She enjoyed sewing, and made the best tamales in town. Irene also enjoyed fishing, gardening, and being outdoors. She was a member of the Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church.

She is survived by her sons, Alonzo Chavez and Marcos Chavez; daughters, Adela Marquez, Gloria Corona, Graciela Chavez, and Yolanda Castilleja; brothers, Guadalupe Sanchez, Rosario Sanchez, Rafael Sanchez, Roberto Sanchez, Victor Sanchez, Valente Sanchez, and Efrain Sanchez; sisters, Maria Gonzalez, Romelia Heras, Sylvia Tena, and Marissa Marinela; 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Irene is preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Alfredo Sanchez; and sister, Oralia Frias.

Rosary service will be Friday, February 9, 2018, at 7:00 PM and funeral mass will be Saturday, February 10, 2018, at 3:00 PM at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses, Kansas with Reverend Peter Fernandez officiating. Friends may call Friday, February 9, 2018, from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses. Arrangements are in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS 67880.
