Herman G. “Coach” Alvarez

Herman G. Alvarez, 51, died Thursday, March 3, 2016 at the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Tulsa, Okla.

He was born May 3, 1964 to Roberto and Josephine (Gonzales) Alvarez in Plainview, Texas.

He married Cariann Davidson on Jan. 9, 1988 in El Reno, Okla. She survives.

He attended Boise City public schools, graduating with the Class of 1983. Herman attended Oklahoma Panhandle State University in Goodwell, Okla., receiving his degree in 1989. While attending OPSU, he was a 4-year member of the Aggies Football Team.

He began his teaching and coaching career in Waller, Texas under his former collegiate coach Jim Phillips. He worked there for five years before moving his family to Guymon, Okla. for 11 years and then to Turpin, Okla. in 2004.

He was a member of the Turpin Baptist Church and the Turpin Booster Club.

He enjoyed refereeing basketball, coaching summer ball for the Hooker American Legion baseball teams, encouraging and supporting the athletes of the Special Olympics, and rooting for the Texas Longhorns.

Survivors also include son, Rafe Alvarez and wife, Sierra, Jenks, Okla.; daughter, Raegan Alvarez, Turpin, Okla.; four brothers: Bryan Alvarez and wife, Tiki, Mooreland, Okla., Randy Alvarez and wife, Joy, Shamrock, Texas, Albert Alvarez and wife, Maria, Sunray, Texas and Chris Alvarez and wife, Amber, Amarillo, Texas; sister, Estella Alvarez, Sunray, Texas; many nieces and nephews; and in-laws, Jack and Nancy Myers, El Reno, Okla.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

• Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, 2016 at the Turpin Gym in Turpin, Okla. with Bro. Jimmy Reed presiding.

Friends are asked to wear their “Alvarez Strong” or a Turpin Cardinals shirt to honor Herman. “Alvarez Strong” shirts are still available by contacting Ashley Lehnert at Turpin schools.

Memorials are suggested to the Herman Alvarez Memorial Scholarship Fund or to the Panhandle Area Sheltered Workshop. Memorials will be accepted at the Bunch – Roberts Funeral Home, PO Box 1112, Guymon, OK 73942.
