Herbert “Herb” J. Howie

Herbert “Herb” J. Howie, 79, Liberal, KS, died Sunday, May 13, 2012
at Wheatridge Park Care Center, Liberal, KS.

He was born February 20, 1933 at Solomon, KS, the son of
Henry W. & Helen I. Carpenter Howie.

He graduated high school at Solomon, KS. Upon graduation he entered
the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. He moved to Liberal
in 1955 and married Ola I. Grant on May 5, 1957 at Liberal, she died
April 19, 2011. Herb was a lineman for Southwestern Bell and AT & T
for thirty years, upon retirement he owned & operated Howie’s House
of Phones retiring 1997.

Herb was an active member of the Western Avenue Church of Christ, Liberal, serving on many boards including the Black Mesa Bible Camp. He was active with Kid’s Inc. and served on the board for many years.

He is survived by two sons, Bart Howie, Liberal, KS; Brent Howie
and wife Leanne, Satanta, KS; on daughter, Bridget King and
husband Harry “Butch” Liberal, KS; five granddaughters,
Briana, Rebecca & Elizabeth King, Alex & Ava Howie;
one brother in law, Robert “Bob” Grant Liberal, KS; six sisters in law,
Bobbie Lundburg and husband Charles, Liberal, KS; Nina Lauderdale,
Athens, AL; Gladys Reese, Dodge City, KS; Ethel Grant, Liberal, KS;
Juanita Grant, Hooker, OK; Janice Grant, Cortez, CO. He was preceded in death
by his parents, one brother and one sister.

Funeral services will be conducted 10:00 Thursday at the
Western Avenue Church of Christ, with Ministers Glenn Walton
and John Henley presiding.

Interment will be in the Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call at the Miller Mortuary 4-8 P.M. Tuesday
and 9 A.M.-8 P.M. Wednesday. The family will greet friends
6-8 P.M. Wednesday.

The family suggests memorials be sent to Black Mesa Bible Camp
or High Plains Children’s Home in care of the mortuary.
