Helen Marcellus Rowland

Helen Marcellus Rowland of Liberal, Ks passed away peacefully on Friday February 26, 2016, at the age of 91 in Plymouth, MN. She was born in Stevens County on the Marcellus family farm and spent most of her life in Liberal and graduated from Liberal High School in 1942. On May 25, 1947, Helen married Harper K. Rowland in Hugoton, KS; they celebrated 38 years of marriage before Harper’s passing on August 2, 1985 in Liberal. Helen and Harper were lifelong residents of southwest Kansas; residing in Hugoton, the farm and ranch in Stevens County, and for many years in Liberal.
Helen was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and a good friend of many. She loved and cherished her family and friends. She was a member of the Catholic Church and Baker Arts in Liberal. Helen enjoyed a blessed life. She loved gardening, china painting and travel. However, her favorite thing to do was entertaining family and close friends at home.
Mrs. Rowland was also preceded in death by her daughter Marsha Lea Wingrave, her parents Glen and Helen Clarkson Marcellus, and three sisters; Nadyne Gaskill, Betty Carlson and Mary Marcellus.
Surviving children are Constance Paynter, Conroe, TX; Dennis L. (Donita) Rowland, Montrose, CO; and Rebecca (Robert) Williams, Plymouth, MN. Mrs. Rowland is also survived by ten grandchildren; James Michael Wingrave, Amy S. Dudley, Amber K. Morgan, Chadwick A. Wingrave, Jeffrey D. Hendrickson, Jennifer D. Williams, Emily Vendel Truax, Stefanie D. Rowland, Ryan Harper Rowland, and Scott Paynter; as well as ten great grandchildren; Caitlin, Bethany, and Jacob Morgan, Evan Dudley, Jackson Vendel and Beckett and Blakely Truax, Samantha Hendrickson, and Maxwell and Mary Wingrave. Her surviving siblings are Charles Marcellus, Liberal KS; Margaret Sullivan, Ponca City OK; Bonnie Lofland, LaPorte, TX; and Janice McCoid, Salt Lake City, UT.
Visitation will be 10:00am to 7:00pm Wednesday March 2, 2016 with a Rosary Service following at 7:00pm at the Miller Mortuary Chapel, 908 N. Lincoln Ave. Liberal, KS
Celebration of Life Mass will take place on Thursday March 3, 2016 at 10:00am at St Anthony’s Catholic Church, 1510 N Calhoun in Liberal, KS where she was an active parishioner for many years, interment will follow. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the National Alzheimer Association or the ALS Association.
