Gwyneth L. Nelson

MEADE – Gwyneth L. Nelson, age 69, passed away late Saturday evening, September 21, 2024, at the Meade District Hospital, Meade, Kansas.

She was born August 30, 1955, at Champaign, Illinois, the daughter of Raymond and Louise Bassett. As a young girl, she attended school in K-2nd grade at Sibley IL and Minok-Dana-Rutland, graduating from ROVA High School in Oneida IL. She later furthered her education, receiving her degree in Special Education – deaf and hard of hearing from MacMurray College and later her Masters of sign language communication from AIU. A longtime resident,(25 years) she taught deaf education for K-12 in Dodge City and for the Southwest Kansas Cooperative for many years.

She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, genealogy, karate having earned her fifth degree black belt making her instructor level, participating in music ministries at church and spending time with her family and friends. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

On August 12, 1979, she married Terry A. Nelson at the United Methodist Church in Garden City, Kansas. He survives.

Other survivors include her children, Gretchen DeMueth of Grand Junction, Colorado, Jacob Nelson of Wichita, Kansas, Caleb Nelson of Great Falls, Montana, Zebedee Nelson of Youngstown, Ohio, and Abigail Mather of Salina, Kansas; two brothers, Nathan Bassett (Tonya) of Bloomington, Illinois, and Cameron Bassett (Kim) of Auburndale, Florida; two sisters, Michelle Knaack (Joe) of McHenry, Illinois, and Melissa Whitaker of Kenosha, Wisconsin; and twelve grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place and a private family celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary, Meade, has been entrusted with these arrangements.
