Gregory T. Fort

Gregory T. Fort, age 73, of Ulysses, Kansas, died Saturday February 15, 2025, in Denver, Colorado. He was born June 14, 1951, in Ulysses, Kansas, the first son of Clifford Fort, Jr. and Patricia Fort.

Greg grew up in Ulysses and graduated from Ulysses High School in May 1969. He attended Fort Hays State University where he was a member and officer of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and graduated Cum Laude with a bachelors degree in history and pre-law in 1973. During college, Greg was also a member of the Pi Alpha Theta scholastic fraternity and a member and officer of the Seventh Cavalry Scholastic.

Greg married Paulette Fort (Bieker) on July 26, 1975, in Hays, Kansas. They moved to Ulysses together later that year. Greg worked as a farm manager from 1974 to 1983 in Ulysses, Kansas, and Garden City, Kansas, and spent time teaching farming practice in Al-Ghat, Saudi Arabia. In 1983, Greg soon joined as a partner in the family business, Fort Brothers Farms, and he actively farmed in the area for three decades. Upon retirement from farming, he worked in the oil and gas industry, employed by Pioneer Resources until his full retirement in 2016.

Greg was an active member of the Ulysses community, serving as USD 214 school board president for 16 of his 22 years in service to the district. He and his wife were considered Big Orange Boosters for life. Additionally, he was a big fan of the Ulysses Tigers, Kansas State University and the Kansas City Chiefs. Greg was also a founding member of the Southwest Plains Regional Service Center and on the Board of Directors for Health Insurance SWPRSC. Greg loved animals and was known for his affection toward German Shepherd dogs. He enjoyed the outdoors and often walked several miles a day, no matter the weather. He also loved to take adventure trips traveling all over the world, including scuba diving in the Indian Ocean off Mozambique, regular fishing trips in Canada with college buddies and hiking in Peru where he visited Machu Picchu.

Greg is survived by his daughter Taryn Fort-Doyle and husband Matt Doyle of Denver, Colorado; son Thayne Fort and wife Jennie of Denver, Colorado; his siblings Cheryl Wagner of Missouri; Jon Fort of Garden City, Kansas; Brad Fort of Ulysses, Kansas; Chris Fort of Phoenix, Arizona; Kelly Fort of Bloomington, Indiana; two grandchildren, Ginger Doyle and Tyson Fort, both of Denver, Colorado; and his dog, Bo.

Greg is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Paulette Fort who passed in 2014 and son, Tyson Gabriel Fort who passed in 1985.

Memorial service will be Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses with Pastor Willy Banza officiating. Inurnment will be held this summer at the Ulysses Cemetery. Family will greet friends Friday, February 21, 2025, from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.
