Girtha M. Chenoweth

Girtha M. Chenoweth of Johnson, Kansas, passed away Sunday, January 21, 2018, at the Stanton County Hospital. She was born March 17, 1923, in Satanta, Kansas, and was the daughter of Coyl and Maude Branam. She attended elementary and high school in Satanta and graduated from Emporia State Teacher’s College. She taught school at Sylvia (Kansas) High School, Johnson Grade School and Stanton County High School.

Girtha married Floyd A. Chenoweth on May 18, 1947. They spent many winters in Harlingen, Texas, and traveled to all the lower 48 states in their motor home. Girtha was a longtime member of the Cosmos Club in Johnson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Ernest Eugene Branam, and husband, Floyd A. Chenoweth.

Survivors include a son, John M. (Deanna) Chenoweth of Georgetown, Texas, a daughter, Annetta M. (Rick) Young of Derby, Kansas, a grandson, Matthew A. Young of Bixby, Oklahoma, sisters-in-law, Ella Fern Chenoweth of Rose Hill, Kansas, and Terri (Herald) Snyder of La Habra, California, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, January 24, 2018, at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church in Johnson, Kansas, with Reverend Richard Fitzgerald officiating. Interment will follow at the Stanton County Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Memorial Living Center or the First United Methodist Church in care of the Garnand Funeral Home, PO Box 715, Johnson, Kansas 67855.
