Gilbert Ray Mires

Gilbert Ray Mires, 89, of Adams, Oklahoma passed away on June 1, 2020 just a few days before his 90th birthday at BSA Medical Center in Amarillo, Texas.

Gilbert was born on June 11, 1930 at home near Adams, Oklahoma the youngest of four sons of Dudley and Effie Gentry Mires.

Gilbert graduated from Adams High School in 1948 and attained his B.S. in business from Panhandle Agricultural & Mechanical College in Goodwell, Oklahoma in 1953. He was drafted into the Army and served for two years before being honorably discharged.

While stationed at Ft. Lewis in Tacoma, Washington, he met and fell in love with Corice Hardman. They were married November 23, 1956 in Tacoma and moved to Adams, Oklahoma where they have made their home for more than 60 years. Gilbert and his father farmed and owned Mires Hardware. The hardware store was at the center of small-town life in Adams where Gilbert and friends enjoyed morning coffee and afternoon Cokes.

Gilbert was active in all aspects of community life and served for more than 50 years on the board of Texas County Rural Water District #1.

Gilbert and Corice were blessed with four daughters and Gilbert took great pleasure in his grandchildren and looked forward to summers when all the grandchildren could come and spend a week together.

Gilbert was a generous man who enjoyed helping others. His heartfelt prayers reflected his deep faith and his love for family and friends. He was baptized in 1941 and was a member of the Church of Christ in Hooker, Oklahoma where he served as a deacon from 1969 to 1974 and as an elder from 1974 to 2016. His favorite scripture was Psalm 1 and he delighted in the law of the Lord and mediated on it day and night.

Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents and three older brothers Ralph, Fred and Douglas. He is survived by Corice, his beloved wife of 63 years, and by four daughters Terri Griffen and husband, Mike, Katherine Gillespie and husband, Mark, Linda Osborn and husband, Kevin and Margaret Meadors and husband, Ives and by grandchildren Daniel Griffen, Brenna Griffen, Kyle Osborn and wife, Bridget, Clifton Gillespie and Christopher Gillespie.

Visitation will be from 6pm to 8 p.m. on Thursday June 4, 2020 at the Roberts Brothers Funeral Home in Hooker. Visitors are asked to wear a mask and social distance when the family is present due to health concerns.

A graveside service for the family will be held at Park Grove Cemetery in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
