Eula Mae (Coulter) Peterson passed from this life on Sunday, September 26, 2021 at Pioneer Manor in Hugoton, Kansas at the age of 95.
She was born April 4, 1926 in rural Stevens County, Kansas, the daughter of Charles Elmer Coulter and Della Grace Greenwood. One of eleven children, she attended Daisy Dell country school and graduated from Hugoton Rural High School in 1944. She was both a gifted athlete and scholar.
She married Cornelius Farmer Peterson on January 16, 1946, and to this union was born a son and a daughter, John and Jane. Eula Mae was a loving wife and mother, a wonderful homemaker and partner in her husband’s farming operation. She and her family attended the First Christian Church of Hugoton. She was a dedicated legal secretary and tax practioner for Kramer, Nordling and Nordling Law Office in Hugoton until her retirement in 2004. She possessed a vast reserve of common sense and a deep inner faith. She had a smile and a caring regard for all who knew her.
Eula never missed a ball game or an activity that engaged her children or grandchildren. She eagerly participated in family gatherings, sharing her kindness, love and generous spirit with relatives and friends. She was a member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary. She loved to bowl and participated in the local bowling league for a number of years. She liked to sew and provided her family with many lovely handmade quilts. She was a member of the Bridge Club and volunteered many hours by keeping the books for the Stevens County Senior Center.
Eula Mae and her husband C. F. moved to Pleasant Hill, Illinois in the spring of 2004 in order to spend time closer to their daughter Jane and her family including two grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as granddaughter Jennifer and her family including two great-grandchildren. C. F. died on March 1, 2005 and is now interred at Hugoton, Kansas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Della Coulter, her brothers Steven, Gilbert and Harold, sisters Margaret, Neva, Nellie French, Betty Anderson, Blanche Webb and June Phillips and Eula Mae’s husband, C. F. Peterson and son-in-law, Frank Zarello.
Eula Mae is survived by her brother Donald Keith Coulter of Hugoton, her son John and wife Betty of Hugoton, her daughter Jane Zarello of Bushnell, Illinois. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Jennifer and her husband Chris Schuele of Liberty, Missouri. Paul Zarello and his wife Kelly of Bushnell, Illinois, Jon Peterson of Hugoton and Miranda and husband Benjamin Spence of Minneapolis, Minnesota. She leaves seven great-grandchildren, Jordan Schuele, Leah Schuele, Miah Zarello, Alyssa Zarello, Adam Peterson, Emily Spence and Ashley Spence.
Funeral service will be Thursday, September 30, 2021, at 10:00 AM at the First Christian Church in Hugoton with Pastor Heath Kelly officiating with interment following at Hugoton Cemetery. The service will also be live streamed on Garnand Funeral Home Facebook page. Visitation is Wednesday, September 29, 2021, from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Hugoton. Memorial contributions may be given to The First Christian Church of Hugoton or the Alzheimer’s Association in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 423 S. Main St., Hugoton, Kansas 67951.
