Ethel May Smith, age 85, died Sunday, January 17, 2021, at her daughter’s home in Independence, Kansas. She was born September 21, 1935, in Hennessey, Oklahoma, the daughter of Carl B. and Viola May (Thrasher) Spencer.
As a young child, Ethel’s dad built elevators and the family had the opportunity to live in many places. Ethel graduated from Grant County Rural High School. She married Henry Raymond (Hank) Smith on March 23, 1952, in Clayton, New Mexico. Ethel farmed with her husband, worked at Kep’s Toggery, and drove a school bus. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Cimarron Grange Club, and 4-H leader.
Ethel is survived by her children, Karen Hampton of Ulysses, Henry Smith, Jr. of Independence, Kansas, Kathy Patton and husband John of Grove, Oklahoma, Kayla Bridwell and husband Gary of Independence, Kansas, and Kim Smith of Garden City, Kansas; sister, Patsy Harp of Springdale, Arkansas; brother-in-law, Phillip Harp of Springdale, Arkansas; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Ethel is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Hank in 2003; sister, Gladys Harp; and son-in-law, Jim Hampton.
A private funeral service will be Thursday, January 21, 2021, at 10:00 AM at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel in Ulysses, Kansas. The public is invited to join the family at Ulysses Cemetery for the interment following the funeral service. The service may also be viewed on Garnand Funeral Home Facebook Live. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 20, 2021, from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel.
