Emilio Mendoza Arrieta, age 89, of Ulysses, Kansas, died Monday, January 18, 2021, at his home in Ulysses. He was born February 11, 1931, in Meoqui, Chihuahua, Mexico, the son of Simon and Dolores (Arrieta) Mendoza.

Emilio grew up in Mexico. He married Soledad Flores on January 29, 1958, in Julimes, Chihuahua, Mexico. While living in Guthrie, Oklahoma, Emilio took care of horses. His family moved to Ulysses over 20 years ago. He was a night watchman for Patrick Well Service, worked at grain elevators, dairies, and farmed. Emilio enjoyed gardening, making trips to Mexico, going on walks, listening to music, and playing dominoes. He loved being with his grandkids. Emilio always considered it a special treat when going to the Sonic for ice cream.

Emilio is survived by his daughters, Abilia Mendoza of Meoqui, Chihuahua, Mexico, Armida Mendoza of Ulysses, Kansas, Socorro Lara of Sweet Water, Texas, and Esperanza Porras of Ulysses, Kansas; ten grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Emilio is preceded in death by his parents; wife Soledad in 2018; and six siblings.

Vigil and Rosary Service will be Thursday, January 21, 2021, at 7:00 PM and Funeral Mass will be Friday, January 22, 2021, at 2:00 PM both at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses, Kansas, with Reverend Aneesh Parappanattu, MSFS officiating. Funeral mass may also be viewed live on Garnand Funeral Home Facebook Page. Interment will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery. Visitation is Thursday, January 21, 2021, from 12:00 PM until 5:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses. Memorial contributions may be given to Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS 67880.
