Ellen M. May, age 94, of Ulysses, Kansas, died Tuesday, January 30, 2018, at Western Prairie Senior Living Community in Ulysses, Kansas. She was born June 20, 1923, in Fellsburg, Kansas, the daughter of Verdie Herbert and Marietta “Maye” Bertha (Johnson) Mitchell.

Ellen moved to Grant County in 1933 and graduated from Grant County Rural High School. Ellen married Burtis L. May on October 8, 1944, in Ulysses. As a young girl she worked for Goldie Sullivan helping with her children and house work before going to work at the Grant County Treasurer’s Office. She also worked a number of years at the ASCS Office in Ulysses. Ellen was a 4-H leader, was on a bowling league and enjoyed helping Burtis on the farm.

Survivors include her grandson, Michael Clarke of Bloomfield, Indiana; two great-grandchildren, Devon Clarke of Topeka, Kansas, Rihana Clarke of Odenton, Maryland and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ellen is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Burtis; daughters, Judy Clarke and Shirley Alcantar; and sister, Norma Hill.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 3, 2018, at the Western Prairie Senior Living Community in Ulysses, Kansas, with Pastor Bob Le Vene officiating. Burial will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, February 2, 2018, from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses, Kansas. The family requests memorials may be given to the Western Prairie Senior Living Community Resident Hair Care Fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, Kansas 67880.
