Ellen L. Barber of Ulysses, Kansas died Saturday, March 26, 2011 at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses, Kansas. She was born in Grant County, Kansas, the daughter of H. H. Caldwell and Tessie (Halsted) Caldwell. Other than 10 years that Ellen lived in Holly, Colorado, she was a lifetime resident of Ulysses, Kansas. She was a homemaker and farmwife. She worked many years as a clerk at JM McDonalds Department Store, Gish’s Sporting Goods and Gibson’s Discount Center. Ellen was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Rebecca Lodge and Patterson Avenue Church of God. While she resided in Holly, CO, she was a member of the Nazarene Church and was a Girl Scout leader. Throughout her life, she enjoyed teaching Sunday School and loved to sew and make clothing for her family.
Ellen married Lawrence Barber on August 18, 1934 at Lakin, Kansas. He preceded her in death on July 15, 1975.
She is survived by one son; Lawrence Barber and wife Roberta of Tacoma, Washington, two daughters; Marilyn Kay Stuart and husband Jim of Ulysses, Kansas, Connie Wise and husband Roger of Canton, Oklahoma, one foster son; David Gibbs of Ottawa, Kansas, 9 Grandchildren, 21 Great-Grandchildren and 6 Great-Great Grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by one grandson; Kevin Wise, three brothers and three sisters.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Patterson Avenue Church of God in Ulysses, Kansas with Pastor Earl Heath, Jr., and Reverend Todd Burpo officiating. Internment will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday, March 28, 2011 from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.
