Edwin R. Herbel: UPDATE

Edwin R. Herbel, 87, of Hooker, Oklahoma passed away July 23, 2013 at Memorial Hospital of Texas County in Guymon, Oklahoma.
Edwin was born December 31, 1925 Southwest of Hooker, Oklahoma, the son of David and Rosa Bolinger Herbel. He attended school at Buffalo rural school and farmed with his father. At age nineteen he entered the U.S. Army serving during WWII. After his return he and his brothers, Wilbert and George took over the farming and ranching from their parents.
On May 22, 1956 in Clayton, New Mexico, Edwin was united in marriage to Betty Meng.
The Herbel Brothers began their feedlot in 1957. The Herbel Land & Cattle began after Edwin’s brothers passed away. He worked with his son, James and retired in 2010 but continued his interest in the farming and ranching until his death.
As a young man he enjoyed roping. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hooker, the American Legion, Oklahoma Cattleman’s Association, and the Texas Cattle Feeders Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers and one sister.
Survivors include his wife Betty of the home; one son, James Herbel of Hooker, Oklahoma; two daughters, Cynthia Rapp of Liberal, Kansas and April Wantiez of Ft. Collins, Colorado; five grandchildren, Valeria Armstrong and her husband Eric of Hutchinson, Kansas, Monica Lemmon and her husband Jassen of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Tara Haines and her husband Avery, Jennifer Herbel of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Taylor Herbel of Hooker, Oklahoma; five great grandchildren, Kaylie & Hannah Armstrong, Kaitlin and Afton Lemmon and Wiley Haines.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 26, 2013 at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Rev. Conrad Oehlert officiating. Interment will be in the Hooker Cemetery directed by Roberts Brothers Funeral Home in Hooker, Oklahoma.
Memorials are suggested to the Hooker Firefighter Association or the Hooker Ambulance Association and may be left at the Roberts Brothers Funeral Home, Box 745, Hooker, Oklahoma 73945.
