Edith Lorene Scruggs

Edith Lorene Scruggs, 95, died March 1, 2016 at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

She was born Sept. 28, 1920 to Robert L. and Nellie C. (Newberry) Richards in Grady Co, Okla.

She married Joe C. Scruggs on Oct. 7, 1939 in Plainview, Texas. He preceded her in death on Nov. 6, 2000.

She was a sales clerk for J.C. Penney, Anthony’s, Just For You, Connie’s Hallmark and also worked as a lunch lady at South Middle School.

She was a member of the First South Baptist Church and the Prestige Club at First National Bank.

Survivors include sons, W. Glenn Scruggs and wife, Carol, Liberal and Ronnie E. Scruggs, Lubbock, Texas; daughters, Linda Sue Thomas and husband, Earl, Bakersfield, Calif. and Anna Marie Brown and husband Henry, Enid, Okla.; three brothers: G.C. Freeman, Tulsa, Okla., Gene Freeman, Dallas and Dalton Freeman, Dallas; sisters, Nina Becker, Dallas and Corrine Street, Kress, Texas; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by four brothers: Fred Freeman, Lee W. Freeman, Bill Freeman and Eldridge Freeman; sister, Mary Nell Downs; stepbrother, John Freeman; one grandson; and one great-grandson.

• Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 4, 2016 at the First Southern Baptist Church with Pastor Jack Jacob presiding.

Burial will take place at the Restlawn Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, 2016 at Brenneman Funeral Home.
