Donna Lou (Stewart) Nix

Donna Lou (Stewart) Nix, age 88, of Liberal, Kansas, passed away peacefully at her home on March 2, 2024.

Celebration of life will be held at Lone Star Friends Church on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at 10:30 am, 2698 State Hwy. 51, Woods, Kansas.

Donna Lou was born to Carl Stewart and Maybell (Best) Stewart on January 16, 1936, in New Albany, Indiana. Donna spent her early childhood years in Indiana with her parents and twin sisters, Bonnie and Janet and many family members, before moving to Liberal in 1944.
She grew up on a farm girl and was so proud of her county roots. She spent many hours in the seat of a John Deere tractor as a young lady. In those days she wasn’t in the comfort of an air-conditioned cab, but that was ok with her because she could always keep a really good tan.
She met her beloved husband, Loren, while attending Liberal High School and they later wed on July 5th, 1953, at her parent’s home in Liberal and made their home on the Nix family farm, where they would spend the rest of their lives, farming, running cattle, and raising their family.
They welcomed their first Son, Steven Micheal, in 1954 and a second son, Phillip Eugene, in 1960.
She kept her kids heavily involved in 4-H and served as an adult leader for many years. She loved all the kids that were part of her 4-H group and Sunday class and would stay in touch with them throughout the years.
Donna’s career included working as the business administration clerk for Seward County Community College, Executive Secretary for the City of Liberal Water Department and overseeing the finances of the family farming operation.
Her passion for volunteering excelled in work with many non-profit organizations and clubs, including, Junior Federation Club, Ladies Auxiliary, Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO), Red Cross, and Seward County Historical Society, along with many other community organizations and often served as President, Secretary, Treasure. Her attention to detail, record-keeping skills, and natural gift-of-gab made her the perfect fit.
Always ready to prepare a meal, she loved cooking for others and was an avid baker, willing to try something different all the time. You never knew what was on the menu when you sat down at her table. She was an exceptional seamstress and could patch a pair of jeans at the drop of a hat.
Her favorite hobby was being outdoors, tending to her yard and garden. She spent many, many hours planting flowers, taking care of her trees and trying to keep her grass alive.
She was a true historian and in her later years, she spent time with her friends taking day trips to surrounding museums to read about the past. She also loved spending long evenings with the Dollar Diva’s, laughing and telling stories.

She was an exemplary Daughter, Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Friend, but most of all her favorite title was Grandma Donna and she was that to more than just family members. She accepted everyone with an open heart, open arms, and a warming smile. She loved spending time with all of her grandkids and great-grandkids. They were truly the joy of her life. She was always ready to play games, read books, tell stories, and attached a lesson to whatever you were doing. She loved attending the kids’ plays, concerts, and many other activities.

She is survived by her two sons,

Donna embodied the best of qualities: unconditional love, strength, perseverance, determination, unending generosity, and a great sense of humor. She lived by the moto “SLAP ON A LITTLE LIPSTICK, YOU’LL BE FINE!”

She is preceded in death by
Her husband, Loren D. Nix, and
Her parents, Carl and Maybell Stewart.

Memorial contributions are suggested to American Red Cross or Cottey College in Nevada, Missouri, in care of Hornung Family Funeral Home, 1212 W 2nd Street, Liberal, Kansas.
