Daniel Edward “Dan the Man” Duerson, 75, of Turpin, OK passed away on
Friday, July 23, 2021 at the Oklahoma Heart Hospital in Oklahoma City,
OK.
He was born on November 6, 1945 to Lewis and Clista (Hopke) Duerson at
Beaver, OK.
On December 2, 1974 he married Berdie Freeman in Perryton, TX.
Dan was a class of 1964 Turpin High School graduate and attended
Northwestern College before being drafted to serve with the US Army in
Vietnam.
“Dan the Man” worked at Turpin Schools for many years and drove kids
many a mile on the school bus and activity bus. He passed out candy,
snacks, compliments, and smiles to everyone he encountered. He ran the
Booster Club for years with a servant’s heart! He Truly loved every
student he came in contact with. Dan was bigger than life in the Turpin
community. He just wasn’t the activity bus driver that greeted each and
every one with a smile, a chuckle, and a helping hand; he was a
community man that wanted to make a difference. Dan was a cornerstone of
Turpin, OK and the epitome of the kind of people that make up the
community. “We say Cardinals, you say Dan… what a great example of a
community pillar who literally had very positive effects on thousands of
kids”. He was also a long time member of the Turpin Baptist Church.
Dan is survived by his loving wife Berdie of Turpin, OK, Sister, Dortha
Lea Duerson of Sublette, KS; Daughter, Lea Ann Olson and husband Dean of
Louisville, KY; Stepson, Dewayne Holdeman of Perryton, TX.
He was preceded in death by his parents and Brother, Jimmy Duerson, III.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 27, 2021, 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm at
Miller Mortuary, Liberal, Kansas with the family present to greet
friends from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm.
Funeral Services will be 10:00 am Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at the Turpin
High School Gymnasium.
Burial will take place in the Turpin Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the Turpin Baptist Church or Dan the Man
Senior Scholarship in care of Miller Mortuary, PO Box 826, Liberal, KS
67905-0826.
