Clevon Jewlane “Jackie” Gilmore (née Kuykendall) 85, of Hooker, OK, passed peacefully from this life on January 15, 2021.
Jackie was born on May 22, 1935 in Hobbs, NM to parents Cleland D. Kuykendall (predeceased) and Christina Edna Kuykendall (née Riggs) (predeceased) of Guymon, OK. The family lived in Guymon and Jackie attended school there. Born during the depths of the Great Depression, raised in the heart of the dust bowl and during the enduring challenges of World War II, Jackie developed a strong work ethic and an ability to adapt that she demonstrated throughout her life.
Jackie left school after the 8th grade and worked as a waitress and later as a bookkeeper in Guymon, Stratford, TX, and Liberal KS, before her marriage to Larry Gene Gilmore of Hooker, OK on March 19, 1954 who predeceased her in September 1973.
Jackie and Larry ranched and farmed for over 20 years southeast of Hooker in the Adams community and raised three children. In addition to her roles as wife and mother, Jackie obtained her GED and graduated from Hooker High School in 1971, was a 4H leader, sold Avon, was active in the community and in the United Methodist Church of Hooker. Jackie was an accomplished equestrian, a passionate gardener that loved her roses, and an eager snow skier that enjoyed hours of fishing. Jackie relocated to Dallas TX. for nearly 15 years where she managed office operations for ‘ABC Industrial Erectors, Inc.’ for 5 years. Jackie then founded several ‘Fit To Fiddle’ health food kiosks within the ‘Fitness Unlimited’ gymnastics clubs owned by Tex Flanagan of Hooker and managed those for 4 years before selling. During the following 5 years Jackie traveled nationally as an inventory control manager for 2 of the largest paper office products companies in the United States, ‘Bowater Computer Forms’ of Plano TX. and ‘Texas Stock Tabs’ of Coppell TX. She enjoyed the travel and was proud of the responsibility but was feeling the desires of many grandmothers to be closer to her grandchildren. Jackie returned to Hooker and for many years ran the ‘Mr. Payroll’ kiosk in Guymon for Evan Eggleston of Hooker before becoming a part time juvenile transport assistant during retirement for St. Francis diocese of Liberal, KS.
Jackie is survived by her companion of over 20 years, David L. Ferguson, and her children Carla Ann Preston (née Gilmore) and husband RJ of Fay, OK, Charles Brent Gilmore and wife Linda of Hooker, and Derry Gene Gilmore and husband Robert of Dallas, TX. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Bianca Sage Lawson (née Ukens) and husband Adam of Anadarko, OK, Tio Sterling Ukens and partner Ashley of Shawnee, OK, Steika Rapp (née Gilmore) and husband Beau of Hooker, and Colter Gilmore and wife Audrey of Hooker. Additional survivors include great grandchildren Reanna Marquez, Skylah Ricks, Zachary Collins, Bexyn and Noble Rapp, and Layton, Gavin and Ava Gilmore and numerous nephews, nieces, great nephews and great nieces that she loved dearly and always enjoyed hearing of their lives and adventures.
Jackie’s siblings are Mary Etta Kuykendall (predeceased), Laddy “LR” Kuykendall (Donna) of Texoma, TX, Jo Collvins (Larry) of Guymon, Cecil Kuykendall (Mona) of McKinney, TX and Elijah “Carroll” Kuykendall of Guymon.
