Cheryl Marie Friesen: UPDATE

Cheryl Marie Friesen, 55, died Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at her residence in Liberal.

She was born Jan. 3, 1958, to Jack and Joyce (Yard) Whalen in Springfield, Ill.

She married Donald E. “Don” Friesen July 3, 1987, in Meade. He survives.

She graduated from Girard (Ill.) High School in 1976. She graduated from Illinois State University in 1980, with a degree in special education.

She was a teacher at West Middle School, from 1980-86, and at Washington and South Elementary Schools, from 1986-2010. She was a substitute teacher for USD 480 since 2010, and was currently, director of the Latch-Key program.

She was secretary for the KSU Extension Board. She was also active with the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life.

She was a member of First Church of the Nazarene, where she served as Director of the Nursery Department, and as Director of Women’s Ministry. She was also past president of the missionary society.

Other survivors include her parents; one daughter, Tiffane Friesen Masimbi and husband, Nsail, Tonganoxie; one brother, David Whalen and wife, Pat, Virden, Ill.; one sister, Linda Gillespie and husband, Mike, Springfield, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews

She was preceded in death by her grandparents and a sister, Brenda Whalen

• Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday at First Church of the Nazarene in Liberal, with Pastor Arlen Ankle presiding.

Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery in Meade.

Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Thursday, and from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Friday, at Brenneman Funeral Home.
