Charles David Thompson

Charles David Thompson, 72, of Overland Park, Kansas passed away on November 18, 2019 in Overland Park, KS surrounded by family and holding his daughter’s hand. David was born December 15, 1946 in Madison, Wisconsin to Dale and Betty Thompson. He graduated from Hooker Public High School where he was a State FFA farmer and played on the football team. He graduated from Oklahoma Panhandle State University. While at school, he met and married Freida “Jo” Mitchell on April 1, 1967 in Englewood, KS.
Dave began his military career at Panhandle ROTC. He went on to helicopter flight school, Vietnam, and finally to Fort Riley, KS where he left the military to head back home to Hooker, OK. During that time their family grew by two, David’s daughter Alisa Dale and their son David Johnpaul. After leaving the military and moving to Hooker, OK the family started the Windy Heights Dairy and during that time Dave and Freida Jo were the recipients for the Outstanding Young Cooperator Award for the Southern Region from American Milk Producers
Dave and Freida “Jo” sold the dairy in 1976 and relocated; but ended back in Hooker, OK in 1979 where they made their home until 1997. Dave took on the manager’s job for the Collingwood Grain Elevators of Midway, Mouse, Hough, and later Stateline. It was during this time that his Christian faith and bible knowledge grew. He helped in Awana’s Bible Clubs, drove the church bus on Wednesday nights, taught the bible walk-thru, & served on the board of the Gospel of Grace Church.
In 1997 Dave and Freida Jo left Hooker for a series of moves that would have them living in Texas, Colorado, Kansas, and back to Oklahoma. Throughout all the moves, the family gained two grandchildren, Isabelle and Abigail Thompson.
Dave and Freida eventually settled in Hinton, OK as Dave became the manager of the co-op that would eventually become Plains Partners. Dave got involved with the community via the Hinton Community Health Organization. While in Hinton, he was diagnosed with a glioblastoma brain tumor.
In 2015, Freida Jo went to be with our Lord and Dave made the move to Overland Park to be near his daughter, Alisa Dale. The next four years were filled with fighting the brain tumor and fulfilling bucket list items. Dave made trips to Alaska where he feed a moose & rode a train. He went to Seattle where he was able to show his family one of the Huey helicopters he flew in Vietnam. On his trip to Las Vegas, he shook Elvis’s hand and visited the “pawn shop”. His opinion of the Grand Canyon was that it was the biggest ditch he had ever seen. He flew in a helicopter over Mount Rushmore & rode through wild buffalo in a jeep. David’s last trip was to Palouse Washington to see a wheat harvest on the Palouse Range. He watched the Green Bay Packers play twice, live and in person. Dave caught a couple of Royal’s baseball games & became an avid dinner theater attendee. And to show his love of farming, David took his granddaughters to a “real” dairy to see what milking cows was all about.
Survivors include: his daughter, Alisa Mueller and husband Mark of Overland Park, KS.; his daughter-in-law, Emily Thompson-McClain and grandchildren Isabelle and Abigail Thompson of Mathews, NC. His four siblings: Bonnie and Bill Powell of Hooker, OK; Lynn Thompson of Liberal, KS; and Linda and Louie Sandoval of Guymon, OK. His in-laws: Tom Mitchell and wife, Pat of Woodward, OK; Carol Garcia and husband, Richard of Yuma, CO; John Brown and wife, Sandy of Laverne, OK; Bob Brown and wife, Brenda of Palouse, WA. As well as many nieces & nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews,
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Kay and Jewell “Muer” Thompson and Mr. & Mrs. Peter and Nettie Nelson. His parents, Dale and Betty Thompson. His wife Freida Jo Thompson. His son, Capt. David Johnpaul Thompson.
Funeral services will be Saturday, 2:00 PM, November 23, 2019 Gospel of Grace Church in Hooker, OK with Chris McFarland officiating. Interment will be in the Hooker Cemetery, Hooker, OK and military honors will be conducted by the Ft. Sill Army Honor Guard from Lawton, Oklahoma. Services are entrusted to Robert Brothers Funeral Home, Hooker OK.
