Bonnie Jean Burkhart

Bonnie Jean Burkhart, age 78, of Ulysses, Kansas, died on Tuesday, August 10, 2021, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal, Kansas. She was born June 23, 1943, in Marion, Kansas, the daughter of Harry and Lucille (Starks) Slifer.

Bonnie grew up in Marion and El Dorado where she graduated high school. She then furthered her education at Butler County Community College and earned two Master’s Degrees in English and Special Education from Emporia State Teachers College. Bonnie married Gary Burkhart on August 14, 1966, in El Dorado. They moved to Ulysses where Bonnie taught in the USD 214 School System and High Plains Co-operative for over forty years beginning in 1965. In Bonnie’s spare time, she enjoyed quilting and gardening, and was a member of the Ulysses Church of Christ.

Bonnie is survived by her husband, Gary of their home; sons, Darren Burkhart and wife Lisa of Bakersfield, California, Cory Burkhart and wife Kourtney of Goddard, Kansas, and Dustin Burkhart and Katie of El Dorado, Kansas; sister, Mary Graves of El Dorado, Kansas; grandchildren, Noah, Evan, Sadie Sophia, Sarah, Hope, Medaris, Kerigan, and Lainie; and great-grandchildren, Karter, Kendall, Chandler, Kymbre.

Bonnie is preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Lucille; and sister, Tammy Sue Slifer.

Funeral service will be Saturday, August 14, 2021, at 2:00 PM at the Ulysses Church of Christ with Minister Warren Baldwin officiating. Visitation will be Friday, August 13, 2021, from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses. Graveside service will be Monday, August 16, 2021, at 11:00 AM at the Marion Cemetery in Marion, Kansas.
