Bernard Dean Popejoy, 85, of Spring, Texas passed away peacefully on November 2, 2016 at The Village at Gleannloch Farms Retirement Center, surrounded by his family. Bernard was born on November 1, 1931 to Carl and Lura Popejoy on a farm nine miles north of Hugoton. He attended Hugoton schools and graduated with the class of 1950.
Bernard married Joan Mills in Hugoton on June 19, 1949. They were married 64 years. Their marriage produced two children, Shari Esposito of Spring, Texas and Dan Popejoy of Waco, Texas, as well as five grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
Bernard loved his career as a lifelong truck driver. He worked in the oilfield with E.M. Gregg Trucking for eighteen years, followed by a 31-year career as a long haul driver for Yellow Freight. He retired in 1998.
Joan preceded him in death on April 4, 2014.
He is survived by his daughter, Shari (Vince) Esposito, of Spring, Texas and son, Dan (Terri) Popejoy, of Waco, Texas. Surviving grandchildren include Kim Oelke of Orlando, Florida, Chris (Liza) DeGarmo of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Kelli (Jeff) Hall of Spring, Texas, Liz (David) Gabel of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania and Andy (Vicki) Popejoy of Waco, Texas. He is also survived by all sixteen great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, November 11, 2016 at the United Methodist Church in Hugoton, Kansas with Reverend Rebecca Davison officiating. Interment will follow at the Hugoton Cemetery in Hugoton, Kansas. Friends may call Thursday, November 10, 2016 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Hugoton.
