Belva Hickey

Belva Hickey, age 84, died Tuesday, June 2, 2020, at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton, Kansas. She was born August 13, 1935, in Liberal, Kansas, the daughter of Joe and Ella (Maschmeier) Freeman.
Belva grew up on the Light Ranch southeast of Liberal where she enjoyed living the ranch lifestyle. She attended a country school and graduated from Liberal High School. She married Darrell “Pete” Hickey on August 17, 1953, in White Settlement, Texas. They had three children, Linda, Don, and Larry. While living in Liberal she worked at Black’s Drug Store, Gibson’s, and Seward County Courthouse. In 1971, the family moved to Hugoton. She worked at Stevens County Courthouse and was the County Treasurer for 25 years. Belva’s pride and joy was her family. She supported her children and grandchildren in all their endeavors, and was their biggest cheerleader. She enjoyed cooking and caring for her family, and for a short time was on a bowling league. Belva was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Liberal and the Faith Lutheran Church in Hugoton.
She is survived by her two sons, Don Hickey and wife Melanie of Amarillo, Texas, and Larry Hickey and wife Pam of Hugoton; brother, Charles Freeman and wife Nancy of Edmond, Oklahoma; sister, Roberta Kepley of Hugoton; grandchildren, Jarrod Moser, Amy (Moser) Blackwell, Luke Hickey, Lauren (Hickey) Potter, Laine (Hickey) Copeland, Susan Hickey, and Shay (Hickey) Miramontes, and extended grandchildren, Lalane McClure, Jeremy Ellsaesser, Grace Eisenhour, and Andy Moser; and many great-grandchildren.
Belva is preceded in death by her parents; husband Pete in 2018; daughter, Linda Lea (Hickey) Moser; and brother Nemo Freeman.
Graveside service will be 9:30 AM on Friday, June 5, 2020, at Hugoton Cemetery in Hugoton, Kansas, with Reverend Andrew Wehling officiating. Friends may call from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Thursday, June 4, 2020, at Garnand Funeral Home in Hugoton.
