Barbara Ann Cantrell, age 91, died Tuesday, June 9, 2020, at her home in Ulysses, Kansas. She was born October 27, 1928, in Charleston, West Virginia, the daughter of Reverend J.W. and Eva (Chandler) Lykins.
Growing up, Barbara’s father was a pastor which provided them the opportunity to live in many places. She was never in any trouble with her parents and never had to be reminded to practice the piano. Barbara would read to her sister, Wilma, every night before they went to sleep because Wilma disliked reading. Barbara attended Anderson College in Anderson, Indiana, for two years until she met Donald. Barbara married Donald B. Cantrell on August 14, 1948, in Dunbar, West Virginia. They moved to Boulder, Colorado, where Donald attended Pharmacy School at the University of Colorado. Barbara taught private piano lessons in Ulysses. After graduating with a degree in Pharmacy from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma, she began her career as a Registered Pharmacist at Cantrell Pharmacy. Barbara, a longtime member of the Patterson Avenue Church of God, enjoyed playing the organ for many years.
The family would like to extend a special thank-you to Toni and Victor Hernandez for their loving care and time spent with Barbara.
Barbara is survived by two daughters, Denise Cantrell of Lakewood, Colorado, and Cynthia Douglas of Albuquerque, New Mexico; sister, Wilma Primm of Raymond, Mississippi; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Barbara is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald in 2003; brother, Hermann “Whitey” F. Lykins; and half-sisters, Mabel Elswick and Joyce Paxton.
Funeral service will be Monday, June 15, 2020, at 10:00 AM at New Beginnings Church in Ulysses, Kansas, with Pastor Larry Borthwick officiating. Interment will follow at Ulysses Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Hope Ranch for Women in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave., Ulysses, Kansas 67880.
