Arturo Cortez
Joe Denoyer - November 7, 2020 1:33 pm
Arturo Cortez, age 71, died Thursday, November 5, 2020, at his home surrounded by his family in Ulysses, Kansas. He was born January 30, 1949, in Doctor Arroyo, NL, Mexico, the son of Santos and Juana (Ramirez) Cortez.
As a young man he obtained an associate’s degree. Before his marriage he was a Professor in Mexico. He left that behind, and he and his wife moved to the United States to live the American Dream. Their family grew as they lived in Texas, Delaware, Mexico, and before buying a home and property in Ulysses, Kansas, in 1986. Arturo provided for his family by working as a derrick hand in the oil fields. After retiring from Seaboard Farms, he continued to provide for his family by working in the fields in Colorado and Montana. Arturo was known in Ulysses as “Cortez” or “The Tamale Man”. He was an accomplished salesman, and a jack-of-all-trades. If anyone needed help he was the first one there and the last to leave. Arturo enjoyed spending time outdoors. As soon as he was ready in the morning, he would be out and about helping his family and friends accomplish their goals they had for that day. He was a very social man and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. His family was very special to him, and he shared his last dance with his wife at his 71st birthday party. Arturo was a loving family man and will be remembered fondly by his family and friends.
Artuo is survived by his wife, Gloria of their home; children, Juan Cortez, Maria Landeros, Rosalinda Cortez, Elpidio Cortez, Fidencia Cortez, Jose Santos Cortez all of Ulysses, Cristobal Cortez of Houston, Texas, Victoria Cortez of Ulysses, Erasmo Cortez and Francisco Cortez both of Houston, Texas; brothers and sisters, 31 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
Arturo is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Baltazar Cortez and Sergio Perez; and one sister, Irma Cortez.
Arturo’s remains will remain with his wife until they can both be laid to rest together, in Mexico with Mariano Rodriguez, Gloria’s father. Condolences may be posted at www.garnandfuneralhomes.com.
