Eldon Eugene “Gene” Leonard

Eldon Eugene “Gene” Leonard, a loving person known for his dedication and hard work, passed away on January 31, 2024, at the Wheatridge Park Care Center in Liberal, Kansas. Gene was the son of Clarence Eldon and Orpha L. (Hankins) Leonard. He was born on January 17, 1951 in Hugoton, Kansas.

Gene had a fulfilling career as the manager of the Stevens County Landfill and Noxious Weed Department. He took great pride in his work and made significant contributions to the community through his role. His commitment to maintaining and improving the environment will be remembered by those who knew him.

Outside of work, Gene had a variety of interests that brought him joy. He had a green thumb and spent countless hours tending to his bountiful garden. He also found delight in feeding deer and had a special connection with his pet miniature horse. In addition, Gene was an avid sports fan and cherished supporting his beloved Kansas City Chiefs and the University of Kansas Jayhawks. His enthusiasm for sports created lasting memories with friends and family.

Among Gene’s proudest accomplishments was his tenure as the past president of the Stevens County Fair Board. Through his leadership and dedication, he played a vital role in fostering community engagement and preserving local traditions. He was also a member of My Father’s House Church of Hugoton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Orpha Leonard; a daughter, Melynda “Mendy” Leonard Graves, a nephew, Marlon Parker.

Gene will be deeply missed by numerous loved ones who survived him. He is survived by his wife Shirley Ann (Perry) Leonard, whom he married on February 26, 1988.

Also, those who survive him are three sons, Michael Leonard and wife Neva, Liberal, KS., Scott Nordyke and wife Michelle, Kansas City, MO., Derrick Nordyke, Hugoton, KS.; two daughters, Shellina “Shelly” Shearer and husband Brian, Brazil, IN., Malissa Hicks and husband Tom, Phoenix, AZ.; sister, Carol Leonard, Hugoton, KS.; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

A memorial has been established for Pheasant Heaven Charities and/or My Father’s House Church. In care of Robson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 236, Hugoton, Kansas 67951.

In this time of loss, we gather to celebrate Gene’s life and pay our respects. Visitation will take place at Robson Funeral Home – Hugoton on February 2, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The address is 314 South Van Buren Street in Hugoton, Kansas.

A funeral service will be held in honor of Gene on February 3, 2024. The service will commence at 11:00 AM at the First Christian Church of Hugoton, located at 600 S Van Buren St, Hugoton, Kansas. Following the funeral service, Gene will be laid to rest at Hugoton Cemetery.

Gene Leonard’s impact on his community and the lives he touched will forever be remembered and cherished. He leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, hard work, and dedication that serves as an inspiration to us all. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
